In this episode we look at how the economy and educational system fared during the Cultural Revolution decade. We discuss how a period of chaos led into a period of stagnation, where things neither got much better nor much worse. We also talk about differences between the countryside and the cities, and how every day life was irrevocably impacted by the social turmoil that occurred.

watch: This video was recommended by a friend, and is simultaneously great and cringe. Anything by DW is generally good, so check out their other short documentaries if ever you need something to watch!
follow: The Contemporary China Centre Blog is constantly tweeting out fascinating articles and beautiful posters from the University of Westminster’s archives. They also throw in a meme or two here and there (I think the account may be run by a millennial intern).
Thant’s it for this week, have a good one!
